A sold-out field and expectations of ideal weather conditions promised another great edition of Ironman 70.3 South Africa on Sunday January 20, 2013.
Triathlon was not always a huge sport in South Africa but with Ironman events coming to the country the sport is growing by leaps and bounds and now all the races sell out quickly.
Many age-groupers struggled with very tough weather conditions in 2012 and were looking forward to giving it their best in this years race.
The fastest overall time for male age-group athletes was recorded by Kyle Buckingham with an exceptionally fast time of 4:17:09. The fastest female age-group finish time belongs to Annah Watkinson who was the only age-group female to finish under five hours with her time of 4:54:26.
In the youngest 18-24 category it was Hein Van Der Merwe and Tamaryn Kietzmann leading the way in the male and female age-groups with times of 4:54:55 and 5:32:00
The male 30-34 category was very fast overall with the top seven finishers crossing the line in under the five-hour mark.
Not to be out-done, the top seven females in the 35-39, 40-44, and 45-49 age-groups all broke the take in under six hours.
Congratulations to Pat Thomson who won the female 50-54 category with a great time of 5:56:09
Roger Steele won the male 55-59 age-group with a 5:41:21 clocking and how about Dionne Birkette, Stephanie Claassen and Dot Hunt who posted times of 6:34:17, 7:18:14, and 7:54:16 respectively in the 60-64 category?
They were the three oldest women in the race.
Congratulations to Ken Poole who was the oldest male entry in the race and sizzled across the finish line in an amazing time of 6:21:26 in the 70-74 age-category.
