On Saturday October 5, 2013 a strong field of pros gathered in the Canary Islands to take on the challenge of Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote.
The original starting field would have been even stronger, but several of the pros originally entered in the race were in Kona, Hawaii getting set for the 2013 Ironman Hawaii World Championships set to take place on Saturday October 12.
The Lanzarote bike course is well known for being one of the most challenging on the WTC 70.3 circuit. Only four pro men were able to post bike times under 2:30 and ultimately that proved to be the formula for being on or near the podium once run was over.
Victor Del Corral was quite far back of the lead group of swimmers when they entered the first transition, but posted the fastest bike and run splits of the day and he is the Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote champion for 2013. Will Clarke and Domenico Passuello placed second and third respectively.
For the pro women it was Agnieszka Jerzyk who stayed near the front during the swim and bike and she went on to post the second fastest run time of the day and that was good enough to give her the victory over Danne Boterenbrood who was just under one minute back. Susie Hignett rounded out the podium.
The pros were racing for prize money and Kona Ranking Points for the 2014 World Championship and there were also 30 qualifying spots to the 70.3 World Championship available to the fastest age-group finishers.
