2013 Hurricane Season Early Outlook

We closed the 2012 Hurricane season with 19 named storms, with many of those reaching Hurricane strength. The highlight, of course, was Sandy making landfall in New Jersey late in the season. I have been looking over various early season outlooks for 2013, and the general consensus seems to be that another above average number of storms is likely again…most are forecasting between 15 and 20 named storms. One of the challenges again this year is forecasting El Nino. Last year, we did not have an El Nino event…and we are currently in a neutral phase. The Tropical Meteorology Dept at Colorado State University will be issuing another forecast update on April 10th.
The 2013 Hurricane Season begins on June 1st , and the first five names on the list for this year are: Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Durian, and Erin.
