Tonight, theatreWashington announced the nominations for the 29th Helen Hayes Awards. These awards, lovingly referred to by those who attend as the Drama Prom, highlight the best work from DC's theatre community.
While the usual suspects are included (multiple productions from Arena Stage, Signature Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company are nominated), the surprise of the evening came as Toby's Dinner Theatre's production of The Color Purple received eight nominations including Outstanding Resident Musical, followed by seven nominations for Signature Theatre's production of Dreamgirls.
Washington, D.C.'s theatre community is among the largest and most successful in the nation, second only to New York for the number of productions staged each year. During the ceremony, theatre productions and artists will be recognized for excellence in twenty-six categories.
Award recipients will be announced at the Helen Hayes Awards ceremony April 8, 2013 at the Warner Theatre.
