The Black Keys, Gotye, fun and Jay Z were among the big winners at the 55th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
LL Cool J, the host of the show at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, pointed out that last year’s event generated more than five million tweets, with the big winner of the night, Adele, averaged 10,000 tweets per second during her appearance. LL Cool J, who has a large following on Twitter with more than 3.3 followers, believed this year’s event would far exceed the total number of tweets after the tallies were released from Twitter. His claim turned out to be true as Twitter has announced that more than 14 million tweets were posted about this year's Grammy Awards.
Record of the Year went to the Belgian-Australian singer-songwriter Gotye for “Somebody that I Used to Know”, while Album of the Year went to the English folk band Mumford and Sons for “Babel”. Gotye also won Grammys for Best Pop Duo along with New Zealand singer Kimbra for “Somebody That I Used to Know” and Best Alternative Album for “Making Mirrors.” The Black Keys won three Grammys for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for their hit song “Lonely Boy” and Best Rock Album for “El Camino.” Jay Z and Kanye West also won three Grammys for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “N***s in Paris” and Best Rap Collaboration for “No Church in the Wild”. The American indie-pop band won two Grammys, for Song of the Year for “We Are Young”, as well as Best New Artist.
Other winners from the star-studded show included Adele for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Set Fire to the Rain”, Kelly Clarkson for Best Pop Vocal Album for “Stronger” Usher for Best R&B Performance for “Climax” and Carrie Underwood for Best Country Solo Performance for her song, “Blown Away.”
While the show was without controversies that impacted previous events such as Lady Gaga arriving in an egg at the 2011 Grammys or Nicki Minaj arriving with an actor dressed as the Pope last year, there were a number of memorable appearances gowns and performances, perhaps most notably when the television cameras showed a seemingly very happy and in love Chris Brown and Rihanna and the moving Grammys tribute to those individuals in the music industry who had passed away last year such as Donna Summer, Levon Helm, Dave Brubeck and Whitney Houston. Jennifer Lopez did her best to create a bit of a stir when she appeared on stage with a very revealing slit dress.
A complete list of the evening’s nominees and winners can be found on the Grammy Awards official website.
