2013 Gaming Review: The 30 biggest news stories

It’s an understatement to say a lot happened this year in the game industry. There are a few exclusions for this compilation including games announced in 2013, which were also released as well as games for 2014. The PS4, Xbox One, 2DS, and OUYA launches are also excluded. That said these are the thirty biggest stories of 2013 (in no order).

  • Ryan Davis, of Giant Bomb, died
  • THQ closed and auctioned off their properties
  • 1UP and Gamespy closed down, but both still remain online
  • Kellee Santiago, who worked on Journey, joined OUYA’s team
  • John Riccitiello, CEO of EA, stepped down
  • Yoichi Wada, Square Enix’s President, stepped down
  • David Hayter was replaced by Kiefer Sutherland for Snake in MGSV
  • Disney shut down LucasArts
  • Canceled footage of a Mega Man shooter, Maverick Hunter, was uncovered
  • Nintendo opted out for their usual E3 presentation to instead focus online
  • EA acquired the rights to make/publish Star Wars games
  • A spiritual sequel to Eternal Darkness, Shadow of the Eternals, was started then canceled
  • Fez 2 was announced then canceled due to a Twitter argument
  • Don Mattrick, head of Xbox, left for Zynga
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth was delayed multiple times
  • Hayao Miyazaki is retiring
  • Sony revealed the PS Vita redesign and PS Vita TV
  • SEGA acquired Atlus
  • Diablo 3 will shut down its Auction House in March 2014
  • Valve announced their Steam Machines
  • The Warcraft movie and Star Wars VII will both launch on December 18, 2015
  • Tom Clancy died at the age of 66
  • Blockbuster is closing down its last stores by January 2014
  • Telltale is making a Game of Thrones and Borderlands game
  • Watch Dogs was delayed until Spring 2014
  • Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will launch on March 18, 2014
  • The Elder Scrolls Online will release on April 4, 2014 PC first
  • Destiny will be out on September 9, 2014
  • Disney bought the license to Indiana Jones
  • Dark Souls 2 is launching on March 11, 2014
