According to SBNation on Sept. 5, Canada easily dispatched of the Mexican team despite a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds from center Gustavo Ayon. Canada went on to record an 89-67 victory thanks to Spurs point guard Cory Joseph. Joseph finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds and six assists. Two college standouts also chipped in with Andy Rautins (Syracuse) adding 19 points and Brady Heslip (Baylor) giving 21 points. Cleveland Cavs forward Tristan Thompson gave Canada seven points along with 12 recounts, while Andrew Nicholson of the Orlando Magic brought 13 points for the team.
Next up for Canada is host country Venezuela. In their previous matchup, they edged out Uruguay by a final of 70-64. Rafael Perez had 14 points for the Venezuelan team off the bench, while Nicolas Mazzarino had a game-high 18 points for Uruguay in their loss. Uruguay and Mexico will also play each other on Friday, in an earlier game.
Today's Venezuela vs. Canada FIBA America's second round matchup is scheduled for a start time of 5:20 p.m. EDT, with the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico battling at 7:50 p.m. EDT. Both games are scheduled to appear on ESPN3 for live streaming online coverage, while the Mexico vs. Uruguay game will take place a bit earlier at 1:50 p.m. EDT.
