The 2013 Emmy Awards wasn't just a celebration of the best in television for the previous year, it was also a look at pop culture. Take, for instance, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's heckling routine at the live awards show from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles Sunday evening. As Yahoo TV reported Sept. 22, the two comediennes gave host Neil Patrick Harris a little advice on how to liven up the 2013 Emmy Awards by taking a note from the Miley Cyrus handbook.
"We got some advice for ya," Tina Fey replied in a faux New York accent in response to Neil Patrick Harris' rhetorical question about anyone else having any "crazy advice" to give him about hosting the 65th Emmy Awards. She and fellow "Saturday Night Live" alum Amy Poehler sat side-by-side, munching on tubs of popcorn, and wearing 3-D glasses. They supplied the culminating bit for Harris' monologue, which had a series of former Emmys hosts (Jimmy Kimmel, Jane Lynch, Jimmy Fallon, and Conan O'Brien) attempting to tell the "How I Met Your Mother" actor how to more effectively do his job.
"Take your pants off," Fey and Poehler both said. "Twerk it," Fey said.
"Yeah, work that twerk," Poehler added.
Tina Fey, who would be seen later in the show accepting an Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series award for "30 Rock," then dropped the pop culture callback line. "I come to award shows for the twerking."
Harris told them: "I am not twerking. I'm not going to do that. That would be degrading."
Perhaps the writers of the 2013 Emmy Awards opening monologue sketch should have written for the MTV Video Music Awards this year as well. If they had, whoever pitched the idea of Miley Cyrus twerking on Robin Thicke, most likely would have never seen that "degrading" idea actualized on a live stage or broadcast to millions of television screens during the 2013 awards show. But, then, without that bit of degradation on Cyrus' part, for which she received nearly universal condemnation, there would have been no reason to write such an amusing satirical slap at Miley Cyrus, MTV, the show's writers and producers, etc.
Poehler agreed with Fey. "Yeah, it might be degrading, but we would be de-grateful." She and Fey both pulled down their glasses to eye Neil Patrick Harris insinuatingly.
The audience ate it up. Claire Danes, who would go on to win for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for "Homeland," sat behind Amy Poehler, was caught on camera laughing, thoroughly enjoying the routine.
After rolling his eyes, the Emmy host asked why the two were wearing 3-D glasses.
Fey: "So we can see your business up close."
Poehler: "Yo, N. P. H. Take those pants off. America wants to see what you working with."
And that was Harris' cue to begin the awards presentation part of the show. "You ladies think you know what America wants, then why don't you get up here and kick things off."
And so they did... by falling up the steps -- a la Jennifer Lawrence's big slip ascending the steps at this year's Academy Awards ceremony -- in another pop culture callback before presenting the evening's first Emmy award for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Neil Patrick Harris, however, did not anywhere in the three hours the 2013 Emmy Awards was broadcast on CBS Television take off his pants and twerk it.
And the American audience at home was undoubtedly "de-grateful" for his lack of exhibitionism...
Let that be a lesson to you, Miley Cyrus.
