On September 6-8, 2013, the AVP and IMG hosted the DO AC Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament for the first time in Atlantic City after 16 years. In fact, the tournament was the only east coast stop on AVP Pro Beach Volleyball tour, bringing Olympians such as Kerri Walsh Jennings, Jen Kessy, April Ross, Jake Gibb, Sean Rosenthal and Phil Dalhausser out to compete.
Not only did the tournament bring some of the nation’s top athletes to Atlantic City, the tournament also generated a lot of buzz, excitement and business to the town. Spectators came all the east coast, including New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and of course New Jersey to get a glimpse at the matches. Many of the players also found it refreshing to come out the east for the weekend.
Elizabeth B. Cartmell, President of the Atlantic City Alliance, in her opening remarks stated, “We are a beach community, but we are all about the sports... Jersey strong is an important message to us. Being able to celebrate the beach and lifestyle of the each is very important to us.” She continued “We are very proud to have a Jersey guy with us today” referring to hometown hero Ryan Doherty from Tom’s River, NJ, who finished in third place.
The three day tournament featured many close matches and even a few upsets along the way. The team of Casey “Boom” Patterson and Jake “Spiker” Gibb proved to be victorious taking home a second consecutive title for the men with scores of 21-16, 21-15 against rivals Sean Rosenthal and Phil Dalhausser. Jen Kessy and April Ross took home the title for the women, posting scores of 23-25, 21-16, 15 -13 in a very close game against the defending title holders of the Cincinnati tour stop Emily Day and Summer Ross.
“We know a lot of you came a long way to be here this weekend so we really appreciate you being here,” April Ross said as the tournament came to an end.
