The 2013 Craggin’ Classic in Salt Lake City hosted by the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance and the American Alpine Club is this weekend, August 23-25, 2013, at the Alta Peruvian Lodge with camping at the Albion Basin Campground. The Jeep Conservation Team, Access Fund’s “on-the-road” team of climbing area stewards, will be joining in on the fun of celebrating the community, stewardship, and all things climbing.
There will be clinics, hosted by Mountain Education and Development, that registered participants can sign up for up to three on Saturday and Sunday. Clinic topics include:
- Fundamentals of Top Rope Climbing
- Fundamentals of Sport Lead Climbing
- Fundamentals of Traditional Lead Climbing
- Multi-pitch Transitions and Efficiency
- Climbing Self-Rescue
- Anchors for Climbing (natural, fixed, traditional)
- Kids Climbing (ages 10-16)
The Stewardship Project for the weekend is to clearly mark the trail that climbers should be using for the approach to Devil’s Castle. In addition to marking the trail, volunteers will be re-vegetating the meadows and plants that have been walked on among the confusion of trail location. The project will be on Saturday afternoon from 12:00-4:00 p.m., so be prepared to get your hands dirty!
Other happenings going on during the Craggin’ Classic include the Vendor Village with climbing shoe demos by La Sportiva and Evolv along with fantastic prize giveaways and swag from some of the sponsors. Friday night is movie night featuring Allison Otto’s “Keeper of the Mountain” and Eddie Bauer’s “High & Hallowed: 1963”. Saturday night is party time with a dinner by Himalayan Kitchen, presentations, raffles and all-around good times.
If you haven’t registered for the Craggin’ Classic yet, get on it and join in on all the festivities in Little Cottonwood Canyon this weekend with SLCA, American Alpine Club, Access Fund and your awesome climbing community.
