Things went as expected for teams ranked 1 through 4 in Week 9 of the NCAA football season. However for the number 5 ranked Missouri Tigers, not so much.
The top ranked Alabama Crimson Tide crushed Tennessee 45-10. (2) Florida State and (3) Oregon each scored in the forties while holding their opponents in the teens. The Ohio State Buckeyes cruised to an easy 63-14 win versus Penn State in a nationally televised affair on ABC.
Here are a couple more games of note along with the Mizzou/South Carolina contest which is was the “Game of the Week”.
Oklahoma 38, Texas Tech 30
The number 10 team in the nation suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon in Norman where the (15) Oklahoma Sooners emerged victorious over (10) Texas Tech 38-30.
Sooners QB Blake Bell (#10) was mostly responsible for Oklahoma reasserting itself as a Big 12 contender. Bell passed for 249 yards and 2 touchdowns and kept drives alive with an additional 44 rushing yards.
The second quarter was pivotal to the game’s outcome as the Sooners outscored the Red Raiders 14-0 on the strength of 2 TD tosses from Bell to WR Jalen Saunders wearing jersey number 8. The first was a 15 yarder at the 5:55 mark followed just 2 minutes later by a spectacular 76 yard strike that sent Texas Tech to the locker room reeling a bit at halftime.
Oklahoma senior RB Damien Williams (jersey no. 26) had 2 touchdowns on the ground as part of his total of 97 yards rushing.
Both teams now stand at 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12 Conference.
Notre Dame 45, Air Force 10
The Falcons of Air Force may have been better off if the government shutdown remained in effect a couple more weeks. Perhaps a cancellation of this contest, a 45-10 Notre Dame victory would have been for the best.
If you were looking for the Fighting Irish QB wearing jersey number 11 in the 4th quarter, you would find him on the ND bench. It wasn’t due to his sore neck either. It was all about his strong throwing arm that accounted for 284 yards through the air and 5 TD’s through the game’s first 3 quarters.
GAME OF THE WEEK
South Carolina 27, Missouri 24
It took a comeback with an injured quarterback behind center and 2 overtimes to do it, but the (21) South Carolina Gamecocks defeated (5) Missouri 27-24 in Colombia, MO. Saturday night. The South Carolina QB wearing jersey number 14 normally starts games for the Gamecocks but was relegated to backup duties on this evening due to a sore knee.
No one suspected he would turn out to be the contests hero. With his team struggling into the 3rd quarter and trailing by 17 points, Connor Shaw came to the rescue by throwing for 201 yards and 3 TD’s. His short pass to WR Nick Jones (#3) sent the game to OT tied at 17. In the game’s first extra session, another TD pass to popular jersey number 23, Bruce Ellington, kept SC alive. Freshman kicker Elliott Fry (#29) ended the festivities with a 40 yard game winning field goal.
Even with the loss, Missouri (7-1, 3-1 SEC) still controls its own destiny in the SEC East.
