2013 Chevrolet SS is a kick in the RWD (Photos)

Once again Chevrolet is looking to kick some rear.

And we’re not talking behinds, more like rear axles.

Set for release in late 2013, but billed as a 2014 model, the Chevrolet SS is an entirely new muscle car. The SS will be a low-production, higher-end V8 RWD (rear wheel drive) performance sedan, on par with Cadillac offerings.

Though actual production images haven’t been released yet, rumors abound that it will indeed incorporate, if not combine, Camaro and the extinct Pontiac G8 design elements into a Police package-like Caprice model. Think Camaro with 4 doors, probably motivated by the all-new (for 2014) Corvette Stingray’s Direct Injected LT1 6.2 liter.

Called simply “SS” (obviously for Super Sport), perhaps it’s fitting to drop the car designation and just assign it the performance pedigree it desires to evoke.

It’s hard not to be optimistic for an SS model. A full-size car with a good old fashioned, north-south engine-trans layout. This is the first time in nearly 20 years that Chevy has offered a sedan in a RWD platform, which has much to do with the buzz already swirling on its unveiling.

The last of the true RWD full-size models ended in 1996 with the Impala SS, a 4-door Caprice fitted with a LT1 260 horsepower V8. With standard items as a limited slip differential and an inch lowered suspension with 17” wheels, it was one (big) serious street performer. Basically a cop car (with all its high performance goodies), all stealthily hid under the guise of black (paint) cover.

Interestingly, the SS will be officially replacing the Impala model in upcoming racing series, according to Chevy's website. Though the public version won’t go on sale until late 2013, fans interested in sneaking a peak won’t have to wait long. According to Daytona International Speedway’s website, the Budweiser Speedweeks is set to begin on the Feb 16 through the 24th.

Sure, racing stock cars aren’t exactly “stock” production models, but seeing an SS lap the Daytona and/or take the checkered flag is a taste of more to come. Until the SS styling is revealed, think about all the possibilities of a 4-door family sedan that hauls more than the groceries.
