2013 Calgary International Film Festival: Picks for Sunday Sept 22nd

The 2013 Calgary International Film Festival is going on now till September 29th. Film festival is a great time to explore films that you may not see regularly. "Blue is the Warmest Color", winner of the Palme d’Or award at the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival, is screening tonight (Sunday Sept 22nd, 6:15pm at Eau Claire, CIFF tickets info). Blue is based on the French graphic novel “Blue Angel”. It is a sexually graphic teenage love story about a girl seeking herself, losing herself and ultimately finding herself. Through her relationship with Emma, Adèle grows into a strong woman with her own ideas on love, and learns to assert herself as an adult to those around her. Blue is worth checking out as it comes with good reviews (spoiler warning) from sources like The Hollywood Reporter,

"It’s a compelling way to shift the story’s focus from issues of gender and sexual identity to questions of social belonging, and Blue winds up going beyond the original comic book to provide a sharp commentary on how couples struggle, and don’t always manage, to overcome their innate differences, even if the sex is still really, really good."

Film festival is also a great time to check out wonderful short films like the ones in "Relative Secrets" (Sunday Sept 22nd, 4pm at Eau Claire, CIFF tickets info) from around the world as festivals may be the only chance and place where you get to watch them.
