The second annual Bellingham Beer Week (BBW) will take place in Bellingham, Wash., from Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 29. All three Bellingham craft breweries – Chuckanut Brewery, Boundary Bay Brewery, and Kulshan Brewery – plus more than a dozen beer bars, beer stores, restaurants and other businesses will be hosting events throughout the city.
This 10-day celebration of craft beer is a time to salute the growing numbers of breweries, beer bars and beer stores that serve the Bellingham area, and it’s also an opportunity for these establishments to return the nod to their loyal, beer-loving patrons.
The BBW idea was the brainchild of locals Jim Parker, a Fort George Brewery rep, and Aaron Matson, owner of The Copper Hog Gastropub, who had recently attended the 2012 Seattle Beer Week. After sharing some pints, they both wondered: Why doesn’t Bellingham have a Beer Week?
Because it was assembled so late in the year, the first BBW featured a limited amount of events. But it created lots of buzz and momentum for this year’s BBW. Early this year, a committee made up of local brewers, craft beer fanatics, bar owners and bottle shop owners was formed to get a jump-start on the planning. Since then, the not-for-profit group has volunteered lots of time and money to make this a fun community celebration of craft beer from Bellingham and beyond.
A wide variety of events are planned for this year’s BBW.
Boundary Bay Brewery, Chuckanut Brewery and Elizabeth Station will all have Oktoberfest celebrations.
There will be a slew of brewer nights and tap takeovers at McKay's Taphouse & Pizzeria, Elizabeth Station, The Copper Hog, The Green Frog, Goat Mountain Pizza, Bayou On Bay, and more. Breweries such as Ninkasi, Yakima, North Fork, Firestone Walker, Sierra Nevada, Elysian and more will be featured.
The Pickford Film Center’s Limelight Cinema will be showing “Beer Hunter: The Movie,” a documentary about the late beer and whiskey writer, Michael Jackson.
Elizabeth Station will be putting on a variety of events, including an Aged Barleywine Night and a couple beer-and-food pairing dinners.
Kulshan Brewery will have a Beer Trivia Night and a Cornhole Competition, among other events.
Chuckanut Brewery and Village Books will be hosting author John Holl, who will talk about his new book, “The Craft Beer Cookbook,” along with a book signing.
The Copper Hog will have many events, including the return of the “Barleywood Squares” live game show, a Lager Off competition, and an IPA Challenge with a whopping 18 IPAs on tap.
North Corner Brewing Supply will be having a free homebrew demonstration.
There will be many special-release beers available, including a collaboration beer by Kulshan, Chuckanut and Boundary Bay, which will be canned on Friday, Sept. 20.
Additionally, there will be brewery tours, beer-and-cheese and beer-and-chocolate pairings, a Beer & Bike Tour and special happy hours, among other events.
Sept. 20 through Sept. 29 will be a very good time to be a craft beer lover in Bellingham.
