The final race of the 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season and the 2013 Countdown to the Championship is the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in California – the same place where the season got started in February. The action takes place Thursday through Sunday, November 7th through 10th, with the last two Mello Yello Series champs to be crowned in Top Fuel and Pro Stock.
The Funny Car and Pro Stock Motorcycle champions were crown at Las Vegas Motor Speedway two weeks ago: John Force took home his 16th Funny Car title, while Matt Smith was crowned PSM champ for a second time. In Top Fuel, Shawn Langdon has a 102-point lead over reigning Top Fuel champ Antron Brown, while Pro Stock leader Jeg Coughlin Jr. goes for his fifth title in the class, with a 71-point lead over Jason Line.
Special events throughout the weekend include the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum’s “Hot Rod Junction” car corral, with dozens of nostalgic dragsters, race cars and hot rods on display. The Hot Rod Junction also will host several NHRA-exclusive “Cacklefests” throughout the weekend, where vintage front-engine dragsters will be fired up simultaneously. The Championship Sunday Track Walk, free to all Sunday ticket holders, will feature Auto Club Ford Mustang Funny Car driver Robert Hight.
The NHRA Motorsports Museum will be open free of charge to fans looking to learn about the sport all weekend; the Museum is located on the Auto Club Raceway of Pomona grounds. The Museum will host the Night of Champions, featuring NHRA Mello Yello drivers, on Friday, November 8th at 6 p.m. PT.
The qualifying schedule for the weekend begins Thursday, with one pro session at 1:45 p.m. PT, and another on Friday at 1:45 p.m. MT; Saturday features two pro sessions at 11:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. PT. Eliminations get underway at 11 a.m. PT on Sunday, with final rounds scheduled to start at 3:50 p.m. PT. The weekend will also feature the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.
