2013 Academy Award winners: 'Argo', 'Life of Pi', 'Les Misérables' slug it out

After weeks of speculation and debate, the 2013 Oscars got off to a bit of a rough start on Sunday night. Host Seth MacFarlane has probably been told over and over to behave himself. His opening monologue was getting a bit...boring until Captain Kirk beamed in from the future to help prevent him from becoming the worst host in Academy Awards history. He performed a few dance numbers with the help of Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum, Charlize Theron and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The night ended with no real surprise. "Argo" won Best Picture and Ben Affleck got his Academy Award, even if it wasn't for Best Director -- that went to Ang Lee for "Life of Pi". All told, "Argo" won three Academy Awards on the evening. "Lincoln" entered with 12 nominations but only came out with two wins, actor and production design. It was a long evening but a lot happened before Jack Nicholson introduced Michelle Obama who re-introduced Jack to recap the Best Picture nominees. Let's go back...

The entire show was dedicated to a history of music and the movies. So, of course, there was a lot of signing and dancing. John Travolta, no stranger to singing and dancing himself, introduced a musical number that included women who have won Oscars for roles in musicals, Catherine Zeta-Jones, who won for "Chicago"; and Jennifer Hudson, who won for "Dreamgirls". That was followed up by the entire cast of “Les Misérables” singing "One Day More" from the Oscar nominated movie.

Oscar winner Halle Berry introduced the tribute to 50 years of 007. There was montage of scenes from the 23 James Bond movies and then Dame Shirley Bassey sang Goldfinger. That was pretty much it. I had hoped that they would get all of the Bond actors to appear on stage together -- even though it had been denied all week -- I still hoped it was coming as a surprise. Alas, it was not to be. But Bassey still has it at 76. A little later, Adele crooned her Oscar nominated song from "Skyfall" and it was amazing -- what a voice on that woman.

There wasn't too much surprise in the acting categories. As expected, Daniel Day-Lewis won for "Lincoln", becoming the first actor to win the award three times; while Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook". Christoph Waltz won the first acting award of the night, claiming Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Django Unchained". No shocker, Anne Hathaway won Best Supporting Actress for "Les Misérables"

In addition to Hathaway's acting win, "Les Misérables" won 3 Oscars, including Sound Mixing and Makeup and Hairstyling. Besides the Best Director win, "Life of Pi" won 4 including Best Original Score and Cinematography.

For the most, MacFarlane was not too shabby as host. He didn't do anything crazy nor did he do anythign rally hilarious either. But he didn't embarrass himself and he was way, way better than Billy Crystal was last year. But the show was still far too long and fairly uneventful. It didn't help that it started at 7:30 CST.

Other than being two long, it wasn't a bad show. There were a lot of great movies in 2012 but it's time to move on, time to get going. What movies will we be talking about this time next year? Only 2013 will tell us. Get your scorecards ready.
