On January 10, 2013 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, this year's Oscar host Seth MacFarlane (Ted, TV's "Family Guy") and actress Emma Stone (Gangster Squad, The Amazing Spider-Man) announced the nominees for the 2013 85th Academy Awards, which will be simulcast live in HD coast-to-coast on ABC on Sunday, February 24, 2013, starting at 7pm (EST) / 4pm (PST) from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. This was the first time since 1972 that the show's host had participated in the nominations announcement. Charlton Heston was the only other host to announce the Oscar nominees. Also, this was a break from the tradition of the Academy president participating with one or more co-announcers in the event since the first nominations announcement in 1964.
Lincoln is this year's favorite leading with twelve Oscar nominations, followed closely by Life of Pi with eleven nominations. Les Misérables and Silver Linings Playbook both received eight nominations including Best Picture. Les Misérables's Hugh Jackman was nominated for Best Actor and Anne Hathaway was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Silver Linings Playbook's leading and supporting actors and actresses all received nominations: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver. Although Ben Affleck did not get nominated for Best Director, Argo did receive seven nominations including Best Picture.
Amour received five nominations including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actress for 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva, the oldest nominee in the category in Oscar history. Two-time Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty also received five nominations including Best Picture and Best Actress nomination for Jessica Chastain, but no nomination for Best Director. Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained was nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and three other nominations including Best Supporting Actor for Christoph Waltz. Beasts of the Southern Wild earned four nominations including Best Actress for 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis, the youngest nominee in the category in Oscar history.
Disney and Pixar swept the Best Animated Feature category with three nominations: Brave, Wreck-It Ralph and Frankenweenie. Seth MacFarlane's Ted received one nomination for Best Original Song "Everybody Needs a Best Friend," which he co-wrote with Walter Murphy.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the James Bond movie franchise, this year's Academy Awards will include a tribute to honor the beloved global phenomenon. A special sequence at the show will salute the longest-running motion picture franchise in history -- starting with Dr. No in 1962. The latest Bond film Skyfall received five Oscar nominations including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score by Thomas Newman and Best Original Song "Skyfall" performed by Adele.
The 85th Academy Awards are produced by acclaimed motion picture, television and theater producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. Their credits include 2002 Best Picture winner Chicago which won 6 Oscars, Footloose (2011), Hairspray, The Bucket List, the Golden Globe-nominated television series Smash, and Tony Award-winning revivals of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Promises, Promises.
