In a report from The Smoking Gun on Sunday, 22-year-old Greg Cimeno and 25-year-old William Filene showed up to a party as Martin and Zimmerman as a joke.
Filene, who is white, colored his face in black paint and put on a grey hooded sweatshirt covered in fake blood and tagged around with Cimeno who wore a black shirt with the words “Neighborhood Watch”.
The two posed with Caitlin Cimeno, who posted the photo to her Facebook page.
Greg Cimeno is pictured putting his fingers in a gun gesture against Filene’s head while Caitlin Cimeno smiles in the middle wearing a Robin Hood costume.
Outrage from social media users as well as defense of the duo’s right to free speech popped up after the picture was posted on Saturday.
“Anything for the laugh,” Greg Cimeno posted on Caitlin's Facebook profile in response to comments.
“Anything for a laugh? So a kid gets murdered and its funny some people are beyond disgusting,” Michelee Vasquez posted on the Smoking Gun website.
Martin was shot by Zimmerman in 2012 while walking home from a convenience store. Zimmerman believed that the 17-year-old looked suspicious and confronted him on the sidewalk in Florida.
After a struggle, Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest and claimed it was in self-defense under the state’s Stand Your Ground law.
A jury acquitted Zimmerman of murder charges in July of 2013.
