Roger Federer has had less than an illustrious season and his losing streak continued on Sunday when he lost to Juan Martin Del Potro in the final of the Basel Open, Reuters reported.
Adding insult to injury, the Basel Open was held in Federer’s home country of Switzerland. Despite his loss, Federer did play some of his best tennis this year, but it was not enough to defeat Del Potro. The Argentine beat Federer on his home turf 7-6, 2-6, 6-4, but had kind words for his opponent, saying that
It’s always a pleasure to play Roger. He’s the hero here and for me my biggest inspiration.”
Some have suggested that Federer has had an “embarrassing” year, with losing multiple matches to lower-ranked opponents. The Swiss tennis player told reporters that he was happy with his performance on Sunday, but he could not take much comfort in the result.
I am a winner, I don’t take much confidence from losing matches. I am happy about the level of my play, it’s getting better but it’s not in losing where I get much confidence.”
Federer won his last grand slam title at Wimbledon in 2012 before taking the silver medal at the London Olympics, but 2013 has been significantly less successful. Federer has failed to reach the final of any major tournament for the first time since the 2002 tennis season.
