2012 Year in Review: Fashion (Photos)

As 2012 comes near an end, a look back at the year's top fashion trends and designer inspirations, provide good lessons to press forward in style, as the New Year approaches. The most memorable looks of Spring/Summer 2012, included bright colors, floral and animal prints while beautiful fabric patterns and textures were mixed with original looks to create perfect pairings.

Red carpet events and runways showcased some of 2012's trendiest styles which inspired everyday street style and chic office attire everywhere. Fashion week 2012 kicked off the global calendar of fashion weeks. Pantone, the world-renowned authority on color and provider of color systems, named Tangerine Tango as the color of the year.

Color-blocking was one of this year's most popular trends. Piecing together bold but complementary colors is the premise behind this particularly confusing trend. Peplum was another re-emerging look of the year from tops to skirts to dresses, this deliberately flared garment emphasizes the waist and accentuates the hips. This year's fashion trends also allowed for more versatility in style from the ladylike looks of leather and lace to sporty chic short-shorts paired with bike jackets and crop tops.

Celebrating it's fourth year of success, Fashion's Night Out (FNO), a prelude to New York's fall Fashion Week was bigger and better than ever this year. Stores in over 500 cities nationwide contributed to the worldwide success in the after hours shopping extravaganza. FNO drew in the attention of models, aspiring fashion designers, and teachers and students of fashion, and brought forth some of the Fall/Winter 2012's most wearable fashions.

The high and draping necklines of evening gowns made of soft, flowing silks and satins, really stood out on the runway this fall season. Oxblood became the unofficial color of fall but crimson was the new black. Black-and-white suiting provided an escape from the dull grays and browns, by giving a more sharp, tailored look.

Cozy sweaters for comfort and warmth; contrasting collars for rock-n-roll yet classy style; and belted dresses for office chic wear were revamped and restyled. Bohemian print dresses, whether worn alone or under a fitted motorcycle jacket, channeled the spirit of the 1960s. Plaid, especially red and black, made a great comeback this year. To round out the year, in preparation for the holiday season, embellished and textured pieces such as sequin, bedazzled garments and gold brocade added a sparkling touch to any style it was paired with.

2012 fashion in review was nothing short of dynamic. It was vigorous, energetic and sometimes forceful with its bold colors. But it was active and changing, even interchangeable and it makes looking forward to the trends of 2013, that much more exciting.
