2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser test drive review

The new 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser is a magnificent machine that is capable in both rural and urban environments. Thanks to Sun Toyota, I recently had the opportunity to audition a press vehicle and see what the FJ Cruiser could do. From first impression throughout the entire testing session, I was thoroughly impressed by the vehicle in several ways.

Capability is a big issue here. There is a lot of negative rumors around the Toyota FJ Cruiser and that it can't stack up against the competition such as Jeep Wrangler or Nissan Xterra. I didn't get a chance to take it trailing, but I did drive it through what I like to call "urban assault obstacles". Consisting of speed bump speeding, curb climbing, and WOT combat-like acceleration and braking, my little test is actually pretty intense. How did the FJ stack up? I was impressed!

Let's talk acceleration. The FJ Cruiser is much faster than a Wrangler, or Xterra S for that matter. The 4.0 V6 in the FJ offers insanely fast acceleration (see test video here). It was actually so fast, that I was indeed given a warning during this very testing (see busted video here). So despite the vehicle's grand stature, it is indeed capable of putting you on the wrong side of the speed limit in a very short manner and pinning you to the seat.

Climbing over curbs and medians is accomplished with ease, and can be seen in the official POVtestdrive.com video for the review. No problem if you take it one tire at a time thanks to an impressive 9.6" ground clearance. That's 1.6 inches taller than the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4x4! Impressive indeed, I found no problem ascending and descending through the perils found at in a Floridian gated community park.

Overall, the FJ is a good alternative for someone who wants a 4x4 but doesn't necessarily want a Jeep or Hummer. Sometimes, it is nice to try something different. The FJ offers a fresh perspective on off roading and it will be sure to stir your inner automotive spirit. Could this be the next big 4x4 trend? I think so! A vast aftermarket parts world and friendly enthusiast meetings await the future FJ owner. The FJ is more than a vehicle, it becomes a way of life. Just ask any owner, they'll agree!
