2012 in Review: Feedback from our Alopecia Essay Winner-Cayla Staples

Our Alopecia Awareness Cruise 2012 was a tremendous success. We set sail September 10-15, 2012. The teenager who won our alopecia essay was Cayla Staples, and the runner up was Sanah Jivahni. Cayla and both parents truely enjoyed themselves. Cayla shared her feedback about the cruise and we are sharing one of the testimonials from an attendee.

"I want to thank Dr. Amerson for the opportunity to go on the 2012 Alopecia Awareness Cruise. The trip was a lot of fun and I learned a lot of things that I didn’t know about Alopecia before I went on the cruise. For example, I didn’t know that eating more salt or sugar could cause Alopecia to be worse. Also, I didn’t know that you could get alopecia from so many other ways than having an autoimmune condition, like I have. I really liked the presentations, but mostly I liked being around the people on the cruise. Everyone in our group was so nice and friendly and they made me feel special. We played games and it felt like a big family trip. The cruise was educational but it was also relaxing for me and my family. I didn’t have to wear my hairpiece and after a while people didn’t even stare. It was nice to just have fun and not have to think about it for a minute. I will always remember this cruise, not only because it was my first cruise, but because of how good Dr. Amerson made me feel about myself and how much everyone encouraged me." Thank you again Dr. Amerson for the opportunity!

Testimonial from Marvette:

“When I learned that I was going on a cruise to help spread alopecia awareness, I expected long lectures and interaction with people I’d barely get to know. What I got was a loving group of people who’d all gathered to show support for a young girl and many others like her. Dr. Amerson provided us with very enlightening information about Alopecia—types, causes, treatments & overall knowledge on how to keep a healthy scalp. And though the cruise itself was a fantastic experience, my favorite part was getting to know our exceptional essay contest winner, Ms. Cayla Staples. Her uplifting spirit & confidence in all that she’s experienced inspired me to seek the beauty in myself when things get rough. It was truly an unforgettable event!”
