We’ve already established Porsche’s are for closeted thrill-seekers. With a body style that hasn’t evolved very far throughout its lineage, it’s hard to tell one Porsche 911 from another. And with blend-in looks, it’s difficult to look garish driving one.
But there’s a new 911 that is not for the faint at heart: the 2012 911 GT3 RS 4.0. It has a big wing and bright red decals. This isn’t your dentist’s 911.
The 911 GT3 RS 4.0 will set you back $185,000. But for the money, you get the highest displacement engine Porsche has ever shoehorned into a 911: a four-liter flax six making 500 hp and 339 foot-pounds of torque. Not only is it huge, it’s also high revving. Full horsepower output and torque are hit at 8250 and 5750 rpm respectively.
But don’t worry; Porsche hasn’t forgotten their mind-numbing engineering heritage. The GT3 RS 4.0 has carbon fiber front fenders, carbon fiber sport bucket seats, a carbon fiber trunk lid, and light weight carpets. Curb weight—with a full fuel tank—is 2998 lbs.
The overbearing attention to detail has paid off. The GT3 RS 4.0 will hit 60 mph from a dead stop in 3.8 seconds and onto 124 mph in less than 12. It’s top “track” speed is 193 mph and if that weren’t impressive enough, the GT3 RS 4.0 will lap the Nurburgring in seven minutes and 27 seconds.
Rightfully, this will be one rare bird. Porsche will only produce 600 of them and will begin delivery in the US in late 2011.
