2012 New England All Star: Madame Scurrie #1911 (Photos)

New Hampshire Roller Derby seems to be a bit of an enigma. They are a force to be reckoned with, and I am very excited to see how they tear things up in 2013 (especially against Division 1 powerhouses like Steel City and Carolina). Even with a furiously strong 2012, there is not much information floating out there on the interwebs about NH Roller Derby.

That being said, what I have found and learned about the Skate Free or Die All-Stars are seriously intimidating; much of that fear factor stems from a skater named Madam Scurrie.

Solid in her skating and strong in her blocking, Scurrie is not easily set off her course. With an intensity unmatched when she jams, Scurrie is not often caught up in packs for very long. Her power and tenacity get her out of sticky situations time and again. (I was only able to find a handful of photos amongst the galleries where she was behind ANY opposing blocker.)

Scurrie is a skater that you see photos of and you’re both intimidated to skate against her and very anxious to challenge her. You know that when she jams, she’s going to get around you and when she pivots she’s going to keep you in your place (and make you black and blue in the process).

Madame Scurrie has always been the one to watch ever since she tried out for NHRD a few years ago. With a successful artistic skating background she took to Roller Derby much like a duck to water. She excelled quickly much to everyone’s delight and made her way up to the A team in record time. Although relatively new to the Roller Derby world, Scurrie did make her way onto the training department where she used her artistic background to teach some fancy pants moves that can be easily adapted to Roller Derby play.

If you ask anyone on NHRD who they want to jam like, the answer is almost always Madame Scurrie. It’s like watching a well-choreographed dance when Scurrie jams: Spins, apex jumping, backwards skating and fancy maneuvers. You never see the same thing twice. As a teammate she is the most humble person I’ve known. She’s good, she’s remarkable even but, you will never hear her say that or elude to the fact that she knows it. She’s always looking to learn more and teach what she knows. I think that’s what makes her one of the most liked people on our league. – Ivanna B-Vicious
