2012 Grammy Awards: Best Comedy Album Prediction & Analysis

2012 Grammy Awards: Best Comedy Album nominees
•50 & Not Pregnant, Kathy Griffin
•Turtleneck & Chain, Lonely Island
•Hilarious, Louis C.K.
•Finest Hour, Patton Oswalt
•Alpocalypse, Weird Al Yankovic

Weird Al has a chance to take home Grammy #4 of his career. "Alpocalypse" was not his finest work, but it included nifty parodies of Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus (Check our out exclusive interview with Weird Al from last year.)

But the big comedy act of 2011 was the Lonely Island, the Saturday Night Live guys who dropped unforgettable videos with Akon, Michael Bolton and Justin Timberlake. They deserve a Grammy simply for the idea of resurrecting Bolton for a comedy sketch.

We love Kathy Griffin, but her inclusion here is odd, since her standup special "50 & Not Pregnant" was never even released as an album. It was available as an iTunes audio download, so perhaps that's the loophole that made her eligible for the category. Griffin's hilarious quest to win a Grammy at all costs is admirable, but it's probably not happening this year.

There's always a split between standup comedians and musical comedians in this category. Musical comedy doesn't win this category often. Aside from Weird Al, the only music artist to take the award in the last 30 years is Flight of the Conchords. So the Lonely Island are up against tough odds.

If the musical comedy fans split their votes between Weird Al and the Lonely Island, look for the overrated Louis C.K. to prevail. Patton Oswalt, nominated for the second straight year, seems to be a longer shot but can't be ruled out.

While the Academy might take the easy way out and reward Yankovic again, it's the Lonely Island's turn to earn Grammy glory.
