Asteroid update of 2012 DA14
Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 at 11 a.m. PST (2 p.m. EST) is the schedule passing time of 2012 DA14, and asteroid with the mass thought to be about 45 meters in diameter and his estimated mass about 130,000 metric tons.
The asteroid which was discovered on February 22, 2012 by LaSagra Observatory in the mountains of Andalusia in southern Spain will pass the earth at a distance around 17,200 miles but no closer than 17,100 miles offering scientists an unique opportunity to study and learn about the earth and the celestial objects we may encounter. NASA with this event sees this as a way to demonstrate the importance of monitoring asteroids, space debris, and whatever unknown objects that may be out there.
NASA recently announced that there will be a planned space mission to an asteroid in 2016.
