For the second time in her brilliant bobsledding career, Kaillie Humphries has been named the Calgary athlete of the year by www.examiner.com.
Humphries, who won the Olympic gold medal in women's bobsled at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, won the 2012 World Bobsled Championship in Lake Placid, New York with Edmonton's Jennifer Ciochetti.
But it was Humphries' winning streak as the most dominant women's bobsled driver in the world that deserves high praise. In addition to her World Championship, Humphries has won seven straight World Cups with three different brakewomen-- Emily Baadsvik of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Ciochetti, and a remarkable five consecutive races with Chelsea Valois of Carrot River, Saskatchewan to open the 2012-13 women's world cup bobsled season.
Two other athletes who deserve honourable mention are Mark de Jonge who won an Olympic bronze medal in men's kayaking at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and Dave Shillington, who scored an amazing 524 goals in the world's longest hockey game in Chestermere Lake this past summer.
Skier John Kucera won the inaugural Calgary athlete of the year award in 2009, followed by Humphries in 2010 and ladies' barrel racer Lindsay Sears in 2011.
