2011 “Their Spirit Inspires” Award goes to High Fives' Roy Tuscany

Congratulations to Roy Tuscany, co-founder and president of High Fives Non-Profit Foundation who was recently awarded the "Their Spirit Inspires" Award by the Disabled Sports USA Far West Program.

The Award ceremony and dinner, June 10, 2011 in Sacramento was the  culmination of a four-day event highlighting the abilities of people with disabilities and the powerful, positive health and confidence building effects of Disabled Sports USA Far West’s programs.

25 soldiers and Marines disabled in Iraq and Afghanistan attended the Wounded Warriors Sports Camp leading up to the dinner. They received specialized instruction in water skiing, whitewater rafting, paddle sports, adapted cycling and sled hockey. The program is designed as part of their therapy and re-integration into the community fitting with the mission of Disabled Sports USA Far West, the Northern California-based chapter of Disabled Sports USA,

Tuscany was recognized for his work with the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation a Northern California (Lake Tahoe) based group dedicated to raising money and awareness for athletes who have suffered a life-altering injury while pursuing their dreams in the winter sports community.

Roy Tuscany was born and raised in the “802” [or in layman terms Vermont] and through college he pursued a professional skiing career while studying to become a mechanical engineer.  In 2006, he suffered a life-altering spinal cord injury at Mammoth Mountain and for the next three years had to relearn "everything in my life from the ground up."

The encouragement and positive reinforcement he received while in rehab led to the formation of the High Fives Foundation, officially formed in January 2010.  Since then the foundation has flourished, bringing an  upbeat message and spirit of encouragement that has captured the imagination of the sports and fitness community.
