2011 Scotiabank Giller Prize announces shortlist

TORONTO — The six finalists of the 2011 Scotiabank Giller Prize have been announced. This shortlist was selected from a longlist of 17 books by a jury panel consisting of: Canadian writer and 2009 Scotiabank Giller Prize finalist, Annabel Lyon; American author, memoirist and Guggenheim fellow, Howard Norman; and UK playwright and prize-winning novelist Andrew O’Hagan.

Below is the list of finalists in contention and their books.  
  • David Bezmozgis - “The Free World” (HarperCollins Publishers Ltd.). Born in Latvia, Bezmozgis immigrated to Toronto in 1980. His writing has appeared in magazines such as Harper’s, The New Yorker and The Walrus, and has been anthologized in “Best American Short Stories.”

  • Lynn Coady - “The Antagonist” (House of Anansi Press). Coady is an award-winning author, editor and journalist. Her previous novels, “Saints of Big Harbour” and “Mean Boy,” have made the Globe and Mail’s Top 100 Books list.
  • Esi Edugyan - “Half-Blood Blues” (Thomas Allen Publishers). Edugyan’s work has been featured in several anthologies. Her debut novel, “The Second Life of Samuel Tyne” has received critical acclaim.
  • Zsuzsi Gartner - “Better Living Through Plastic Explosives” (Hamish Hamilton Canada). Gartner is the author of the bestselling story collection “All the Anxious Girls on Earth” and the editor of “Darwin's Bastard's: Astounding Tales from Tomorrow.” In 2007, she received a National Magazine Award for Fiction. She is also a multi-award winner for her magazine journalism.
  • Michael Ondaatje - “The Cat’s Table” (McClelland & Stewart). Ondaatje has written novels (including “The English Patient”), a memoir, a non-fiction book and 11 books of poetry. He is the recipient of the Booker Prize, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, the Giller Prize, and the Prix Médicis.

The winner of this year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize will be announced on November 8 in Toronto. The event will air live on CBC’s Bold TV at 9:00 p.m. (ET). CBC Television will provide an encore showing at 11 p.m. Viewers may also catch the livestream on CBC Books.

Named in honour of the late literary journalist Doris Giller, the Scotiabank Giller Prize was founded in 1994 by her husband Jack Rabinovitch. Every year, the Prize awards $50,000 to the author of the best Canadian novel or short story collection published in English. Other finalists receive $5,000.
