2011 NPC Mens Physique Division brings in a different type of athlete

Each year there seems to be a new class, division or major change in the sport of bodybuilding, and 2011 will be no different. With the introduction of the Bikini division competitors wondered when a "men's bikini division" would arise, and although that didn't happen, there was the birth of something else. The Mens' Physique Division. If you can't get your mind around that think chiseled abs with the muscularity of a Men's Health cover model with an appealing combination of aesthetics and symmetry.

This new physique division will open doors for many men who are just shy of being bodybuilders, but carry a sculpted physique. Just as the other divisions have a judging criteria, so does the men's physique division.  The basic premise is conditioning, muscularity and good presentation while in board shorts and barefoot.

This division is open to competitors who don't want to look like the three hundred pound beasts seen on the IFBB stage, or for those who prefer to minimize or exclude the use of performance drugs. Does this mean it will cause natural competitors to move towards the NPC, or will the division bring in "that guy" who has no business being on stage?

Competitors, judges and promoters have already seen this happen in the women's Bikini division, and it's led to negative feelings for this side of the sport.  The bikini division  has appealed to gorgeous competitors such as Rima Fakih and Gillian Risebury, as well as, a slew of competitors who decided to slap on tanner, cut  water weight and call themselves athletes.  Let's hope for the sake of everyone this is not the case of the Mens Physique Division.
