Penn State wrestling adds more honors to its trophy case.
WIN presented the winners of the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships team title with these awards:
- Mike Chapman Impact Award: Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and his entire athletic department
- Dan Gable Coach of the Year: Cael Sanderson, head wrestling coach at Penn State
- Schalles Award: Andrew Alton, Penn State 141-pound freshman, as the nation's best collegiate pinner
The two awards that didn't go to Penn State: The Junior Schalles Award to Nick Gwiazdowski, a two-time New York State high school mat champ, deemed the country's most prolific prep pinner... and WIN's Journalist of the Year, Andy Hamilton of the Iowa City Press Citizen, who only writes about Penn State wrestling when they go up against the University of Iowa, the focus of Hamilton's wrestling writing.
