Enter the Kansas City Veterinary Care Costume Contest by emailing a photo of your costumed pet to jkasiska@kcvetcare.com or by posting your pet's picture on the KCVC Facebook page by Oct. 28. KCVC's Facebook friends will vote for their favorite costume. KCVC will announce the winner on its Facebook page on Halloween. Prizes will go to the top three placements. If you need costume ideas, KCVC has some costumes available for purchase at the clinic (7240 Wornall Road, KCMO).

Send Brookside Barkery & Bath a photo of your pet in a Halloween costume for a chance to win a $50 Barkery gift card. Costumes can be scary, funny or just plain cute. All photos will be on display; you'll need to designate whether you want your picture shown at the KCMO, Lee's Summit or Olathe store. The Barkery staff will choose a dog and a cat entry at each location. Email your entry to steve@barkerybath.com by Oct. 30 (this is an extension of the original deadline). Your designated store needs to be in the subject line of your email. Include the name of your pet and your name and phone number on the entry. You can also drop off your entry at any store, or mail it.
Saturday, Oct. 22
Dress up your four-legged friend for the Johnson County Big Bad Canines Costume Contest and Parade. This event is for all ages and breeds. It's held in conjunction with the Big Bad Pumpkin Derby. Enter your pooch for $5 by calling 913-826-3160. The event is from 11 a.m. to noon at the Shawnee Mission Park Marina parking lot (7900 Renner Road, Shawnee).
The Growl-o-Ween Parade starts at 11 a.m. at Mill Creek Park (47th and Broadway, KCMO). Three Dog Bakery sponsors this event. It begins with costume contests at the park. Then, take your dog trick-or-treating at participating Country Club Plaza businesses. Advance registration is $10; call 816-753-3647. Registration on the day of the event is $15.
Sunday, Oct. 23
Bring your pet to Pawz at Play (11200 Mastin St., Overland Park) for its Halloween Costume Contest. Please bring items to help the pets of homeless people in our area. Donations of pet food, treats, blankets, towels and toys are appreciated and will serve as your entry fee. The grand prize winner will get five free days of doggie daycare at Pawz at Play. The fun begins at 5 p.m. Call 913-451-7299 for more information.
Saturday, Oct. 29
Children and small dogs (dogs under 20 pounds) are invited to wear their costumes at the Boos & Barks Halloween Parade in downtown Lee's Summit. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Lee's Summit City Hall Plaza (220 SE Green St.). The parade starts at 10 a.m. Trick-or-treating at local businesses lasts until noon.
The Bow Wow Ween Costume Party is from noon to 2 p.m. at Queen of Paws Boutique (5405 W 151st St., Leawood). Queen of Paws and the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation are sponsoring this event. Registration is free; donations of supplies to help shelter pets are appreciated.
The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City hosts its Happy "Howl"oween Pet Reunion and Open House from 1 to 4 p.m. at the shelter (5445 Parallel Parkway, KCK). The pet costume contest begins at 2 p.m. Bring a toy for a shelter animal, and you'll get a free photo of you and your pet. HSGKC says if your pet isn't a "party animal," bring a picture of your pet instead. For more details, email casey@hsgkc.org or call 913-596-1000, extension 115.
Join Wayside Waifs and Hawthorne Animal Hospital (11966 Roe Ave., Overland Park) for the Hawthorne Howl. Hundreds of costumed dogs will parade along the many shops at Hawthorne Plaza. Folks from Wayside Waifs will hand out treats and other fun stuff for you and your pet. Hawthorne Howl is from 2 to 4 p.m.
Sydney's Pet Spa (13656 Roe Blvd., Leawood) is having its annual Barktober Bash from 3 to 6 p.m. The main event is the pet costume contest. Sydney's will award prizes to the top three placements. KSHB-TV's Gary Lezak will serve as master of ceremonies, and Sports Radio 810 will do a live remote. Great food and a wine tasting are part of the fun. Other activities include face painting, paw printing, bobbing for bones and a silent auction. The entry fee is $5; proceeds go to Chain of Hope.
Halloween
The Best Costumed Dog Contest during the Liberty Square Spooktacular begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Liberty City Hall fountain (101 E Kansas St.). All Your Pets is sponsoring the event.
The pumpkin carving in the photo was by Tom Wall from a stencil published on the Better Homes and Gardens website (www.bhg.com) in 2009. You can download your own stencils here, but be aware that you will have to log into the BHG website to do so, or sign up for a free account.
