Last year, it seemed that everything Lady Antebellum touched turned to gold. With their unparalleled hit Need You Now taking awards in country music as well as other genres, the group had set their own bar pretty high. However, on September 6, 2011, Lady Antebellum was nominated once again for Vocal Group of the Year by the CMAs.
The CMA nomination comes at a time when Lady Antebellum is just getting the momentum going for their newly released album, Own the Night, so it remains to be seen if they can reign in this category for another year. The competition consists of the exact same artists who were nominated last year: The Band Perry, Little Big Town, Rascal Flatts and Zac Brown Band. The Band Perry is proving to be a break out artist, having won the fan-voted categories at the ACM's earlier this year. Little Big Town, whose perfect harmonies came together once again for their top ten song, Little White Church, have always had the potential to be strong contenders. Rascal Flatts' consistency always keeps them in the running, while Zac Brown Band brings a unique sound that has gained a lot of fans in a short amount of time in the spotlight.
Lady Antebellum had an outstanding run with their album Need You Now, but the timing of the 2011 Vocal Group of the Year nomination may not be to their advantage this time around. With Need You Now having pretty much exhausted its potential and Own the Night still being so new, there's a good chance one of the other groups will clinch the award this year. However, Lady Antebellum has already proven that they should never be underestimated, so only time, and the sealed envelope, will tell.
The 2011 CMA Awards will air on ABC on November 9th.
