Last night proved to be a great night in Las Vegas as the 2011 Billboard Music Awards kicked off at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. It was a night of great performances, history with the first ever Billboard Millenium Award presented to Beyonce, and overall a great win for Nashville as Taylor Swift and and Lady Antellebum walked away with awards.
There were also appearances and special performances from Ke$ha and Keith Urban.
The big winners of the night were Eminem ( who was absent at the show, but if your in TN for Bonnarro be sure to see him LIVE then) and Justin Bieber taking home six awards each. Eminem won awards in the following categories – -Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Song and Top Rap Album. Bieber faired well as the youngest nominee, winning Top New Artist, Top Social Artist, Top Streaming Artist, Top Digital Media Artist, Top Pop Album and Top Streaming Song video. Not bad at all for his first Billboard Music Awards.
Of course other artists such as: Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Usher, Taylor Swift, Mumford & Sons and Taio Cruz took home 3 awards a piece. Chris Tomlin, Shakira and Train each took home 2 Billboard Music Awards. While Bruno Mars, Lady Antebellum, Black Eyed Peas, Enrique Iglesias, Ludacris, Nelly, Neon Trees, Skillet, U2, Will.I.Am and Edward Maya & Vika Jigulina each received 1 Billboard Music Award.
Overall, it was eventful night filled with live entertainment and surprise performances. The best performance of the night award would have to go to Beyonce, whom hit the stage and had all eyes on her while performing "Who Run the World" (Girls)from her upcoming album titled "4." She was honored by heavy hitters and legendary artists like Stevie Wonder, Babyface, and even the First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama, family and many more.
Next, I would have to say Cee-Lo had a big wow factor as he appeared to perform on a decked out bedazzled studded piano and black 70 inspired looking suit spinning up and down in every direction and upside down at one point. It was hard to concentrate on his singing, due to his crazy entrance. Still, he killed his performance and had our attention with his crowd favorite song "Forget You."
On the other hand, the wierdest surprise came in the form of a lip-singing Britney Spears. This pop diva came up from the floor to join Rihanna for her performance "S&M" on a stripper pole equipped with diamond handcuffs. To finish things off with a bang the two had a pillow fight and a kiss. ( Does this ring a bell Madonna/ Britney MTV performance?)
As if that weren't enough, Britney then popped up briefly on stage with Nicki Minaj when she performed her latest hit "Super Bass." She interrupted with her edgy track "Till the World Ends."
This was a night of pure live entertainment, memorable moments, and hot fashion statements. Congratulations to all the winners and Beyonce for her winning the highest acheivement with all her work and dedication over 15 years. Be sure to check out my winner's list below and some of the performances in the video section to the left.
