It really seems that the Seattle Seahawks went after quality pieces. They are in the middle of what can best be called a rebuild. They had to find a replacement for Walter Jones who retired, they had to get some more offensive weapons, and they had to find some guys in the later rounds that could contribute in some way. They also were looking to rebuild their defensive secondary.
For the most part I think they accomplished all of that. That got lucky that OT Russell Okung was still there at six, and he will step in and replace Jones and protect their QB’s blind side.
With the 14th pick they added safety Earl Thomas. What this cat lacks in size is more than makes up for in instincts, range, and playmaking ability. The Seahawks have not had a Safety intercept more than five passes since 1997. That is very likely to change.
With the 60th pick in the second round they selected Golden Tate, who will step in and become the featured receiver. They were very lucky to land him after moving way down in the second round in the wake of the Charlie Whitehurst trade.
In the fourth round the took CB Walter Thurmond who likely would have been much higher had it not been for a knee injury and ligament surgery. He improves the secondary and may find some time as a punt returner. They also added DE EJ Wilson in this round. He started 39 games in College and will improve the Seahawks pass rush. He consistently makes plays in the back field.
In the fifth round the work on the secondary continued as they selected Kam Chancellor. The plan is to use him at strong safety. Come the sixth round they picked up TE Anthony McCoy who had a much higher grade on him, but fell here due to a positive drug test at the Scouting Combine.
In the seventh Round they added another DE in Dexter Davis. This is another pick made to help improve their pass rush. They also added a development project in WR Jameson Konz.
