Can you believe the year 2010 is approaching? For most people, when a new year comes, a new list of desires generates. One of the common wishes for a new year is prosperity. What do you think about when prosperity comes to mind? Do you think about money, wealth, or fame? In what ways do you think you can prosper this year? Is it by working longer hours, furthering your education, or changing jobs? These are all ways people think they can prosper.
If prosperity is on your list for the New Year, here is something to consider. According to the Bible, prosperity goes hand and hand with obedience to God. In Biblical times, men prospered because of their obedience to God. Job was an excellent example of someone struggling with why he should obey when "bad things" happen. Job had everything taken away from him because Satan thought he could get Job to crumble under his circumstances and curse God. Although Job had a great deal of emotion to sort through, in the end he practiced the obedience God required of him. By being obedient, Job was able to prosper again. The Book of Job has great points about prosperity:
Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you.
If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and their years in contentment.
After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before.
In order to practice obedience, you need to know what God expects of you as His creation.
Here are some practical ways to learn and understand God’s word:
• Pray and commit your Bible study to God.
• Study the Bible with other people or as part of a church group.
• Study the Bible daily, write down what you learn, and how you will apply it to your life
• Find mature Christians who you can learn from and imitate.
The blessing of prosperity can be a reality in 2010 by aligning with the plans and purposes God has for you. Only then will your prosperity be able to blossom. Believe that God wants only what is best for you and He is ready to give it to you according to your obedience to Him. The pathway to prosperity consists of a minimum of six practices:
1. Fear the Lord
Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours.
2. Heed Instructions
Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.
3. Pursue Righteousness
He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity, and honor.
4. Confess and Turn from Sin
He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
5. Trust in the Lord
A greedy man stirs up dissension, but he who trusts in the LORD will prosper.
6. Believe in God’s Plans for your Life
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
• In what ways would you like to prosper? Are you willing to do it God’s way?
• Identify the areas in your life where disobedience or sin has control. What changes will you make in order to prosper?
• How can your understanding of prosperity according to God’s way help someone else?
