Get your popcorn and Tivo's ready because the 82nd Academy Awards will air Sunday, March 7th, 2010.

The Academy Awards, also known as the "Oscars,"  are "presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, and writers" (wikipedia).

There are many actors up for an Oscar.  Jeff Bridges, George Clooney, Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep, Penelope Cruz, Stanley Tucci, and  Mo'Nique, are all nominate.

Although the Academy Awards are a traditional awards show, filled with heart-felt acceptance speeches and special guests, most viewers just want to see the magnificent gowns and dresses.

Most female celebrities attending a prestigious awards show, such as the Academy Awards, take the classic route when choosing their gown.  The gowns are usually floor length, many include trains.  Classic cuts, such as the Mermaid.  Many are detailed with exquisite beading, expertly sewn garments, and perfectly fitted.  The classic colors are black, white and ivory; others are typically jewel tones such as purple, green and blue. If you look up, "Academy Awards Dresses," you will have a difficult time figuring out what year the dresses are from, they are all very classic and chic.

A non-celebrity, like us, will not normally wear an extravagant dress such as the ones at the Academy Awards, although there are some occasions to get dolled up.  A formal wedding, charity ball, prom, benefit, or banquet are appropriate occasions to wear gowns.  Keep in mind that formal dresses will be slightly more expensive than other dresses.  The amount of material, quality, fabric, and limited quantity cause the price to increase.

Here are a few divine gowns that are similar in style to Academy Awards:
