2010 New York Mets payroll

The New York Mets are in a bad situation. They are in a large market, but they have to share that with the free spending Yankees. They have a new ball park, but have yet to put a team on the field that will get their fan base excited.

Sure many of the Mets troubles are because of injuries, but the fans are not hearing that. New York is a tough media market, and the fans their do not want to hear excuses. The simple fact here is a team that spends 134 million on payroll (the fourth largest MLB payroll) should be a lot better than they are.

In 2009 they limped home with a 70-92 record, so far this year they are 18-20 and 6 games behind in their division. They have a new ball park and that helped them get more than 3 million fans to the ball park, but so far in 2010 they are selling only about 75% of their ticket inventory.

It seems that their fans are unwilling to shell out the 37 dollars the average ticket costs at Citi Field to see a mediocre baseball team. The Mets have a number of bad, big contracts and that seems to be where this huge payroll number comes from.

While their overall payroll numbers is large their average salary is a bit elevated, but almost half of the 8 million dollar average salary of the cross town Yankees.

With that being said here is a look at the 2010 New York Mets payroll numbers:

Total Payroll: 134,422,942
Average Salary: 4,800,819
Median Salary: 1,375,000
