2010 Kansas City Chiefs draft class

The draft fell kind of perfect for the Kansas City Chiefs. Heading into the draft they were looking to add playmakers to the offense, defense, and special teams. There was no need to get really fancy, just take the players that were there to take and move up when the team feels it needed too.

With the fifth overall pick they get Safety Eric Berry, who should step in and provide an immediate impact within the Chiefs defensive secondary. Not only is Berry an exceptional talent, he is very smart and mature. He spent 2009 learning defensive schemes fro Monte Kiffin, and that is going to pay big dividends for the Chiefs in 2010.

In the second round (36th overall) the Chiefs added a playmaker to their offense. RB Dexter McCluster can run the ball, catch the ball, and if need be even throw the ball. He looks to be very busy in Charlie Weis’ offense.

The Chiefs had a big time need a kick/punt returner so with the pick they got from the Atlanta Falcons in the Tony Gonzales trade; they took one of the best returners in this draft in CB Javier Arenas of Alabama. While they may use him in the secondary, it seems his main job is going to be as a returner.

With the 68th overall pick the Chiefs picked up an interior offensive lineman in Jon Asamoah. Jon may need a little time to develop, and since the Chiefs have a number of quality interior linemen he can develop into the team one day starting center.

The Chiefs moved up to the 93rd overall pick to get another weapons for Offensive Coordinator Charlie Weis’ offense in TE Tony Moeaki of Iowa. He has some injury concerns but when he is healthy he can catch passes, and block and Weis will find a nice role for him.

After trading away their picks in the fourth round, their next pick came at 136th overall in the fifth round and they took Safety Kendrick Lewis, this looks to be a depth pick. Their last pick in this draft also came in the fifth round (142 overall) and they took LB Cameron Sheffield of Troy. The hope there is he moves to the outside and develops into a player that can get this team a consistent edge pass rush.

Now a list of the 2010 Kansas City Chiefs draft picks:

Round Two (50)- CB Javier Arenas Alabama
