2010 Grammy Awards: Best Rock Album prediction & analysis

2010 Grammy Awards: Best Rock Album nominees
Black Ice, AC/DC
Live from Madison Square Garden, Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood
21st Century Breakdown, Green Day
Big Whiskey & The GrooGrux King, Dave Matthews Band
No Line on the Horizon, U2

U2 are Grammy darlings, having captured an astounding 22 Grammy Awards over the years. They have a decent shot to win #23 in this category, but they'll be challenged by Green Day and the Dave Matthews Band.

No Line on the Horizon was a massively overrated album that was also a total bust in terms of singles. Its biggest hit, "Get on Your Boots," peaked at #37 on the U.S. singles chart. Nobody aside from U2 diehards cared about this one. Hopefully, voters won't reward this mediocre effort.

Green Day are also favorites of the Recording Academy. 21st Century Breakdown wasn't as consistent as their last effort American Idiot, which won a pair of Grammy Awards.

Since both U2 and Green Day had down years, the door is open for a new contender, and that's the Dave Matthews Band. DMB's Big Whiskey & The GrooGrux King was an impressive album that finally managed to capture the energy and excitement of the band's live show.

The nominations for AC/DC and Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood were surprising, but neither act figures to be a serious contender for this award.

Given that the Dave Matthews Band is also up for Album of the Year, DMB is a slight favorite here over Green Day.

I think 21stCB is hands down the best rock album this year. Everything about it is bigger than American Idiot.
