2010 Grammy Awards: Best Contemporary Folk Album nominees
•Middle Cyclone, Neko Case
•Our Bright Future, Tracy Chapman
•Live, Shawn Colvin
•Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, Elvis Costello
•Townes, Steve Earle
Elvis Costello is the name that jumps out among this year's Best Contemporary Folk Album nominees. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has only claimed a single Grammy, and that was in 1998 for his collaboration with Burt Bacharach, but he figures to have a good shot to take this one home.
Another exciting name is Neko Case, the indie folk artist and sometimes-member of the New Pornographers. Case's Middle Cyclone was an acclaimed recording that actually earned her a second Grammy nomination in the oddball category Best Recording Package. This could be the year voters decide Case is worthy of Grammy recognition.
Tracy Chapman's Our Bright Future was what all Tracy Chapman albums are - low-key, well-crafted and consistent. Both Chapman and Shawn Colvin claimed this award eons ago - Chapman in 1989 for her debut effort and Colvin in 1991 for Steady On.
Steve Earle might be considered the default winner in this category. He seemingly wins whenever there isn't a big name like Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan nominated. Earle has two wins in the past five years and the prediction here is that he wins again, though a Neko Case victory would be a welcome surprise.

I've loved Elvis Costello from back when he was an angry young punk rocker! (Showing my age.)

I think Shawn Colvin's cd is exquisite. Crossing my fingers she wins.
