It is kind of hard to gauge exactly what the Detroit Lions accomplished in this draft. They are still bad enough to have significant needs at several positions, and the most glaring needs were play makers on the defensive side of the ball. For the most part, this looks like a pretty good draft class, and they may have landed one of the best defensive prospects to come along in quite some time.
The biggest miss may be not taking a new prospect for the weak side linebacker position vacated by the trade of Ernie Sims. Zach Follet may not be ready to step into that roll, and they could have used another guy there.
Other than that it seems that the Lions did a very good job of filling their needs. With the addition of Ndamukong Suh the Defensive line has been virtually remade this off season. Amari Spievey steps in to hopefully be the answer at one of the CB spots. Jahvid Best will come in to be the featured RB, and with the other offensive additions made this off season may have a lot of running room.
In the later rounds they added an OT prospect in Jason Fox who could pressure RT Gosder Cherilus for playing time, while the team grooms him to one day replace LT Jeff Backus. DE Willie Young is a depth pick, and Mr. Irrelevant Tim Toone will have to fight for a special teams job on the 2010 Lions roster.
All in all it looks like a pretty good draft class, but only time will tell us how good it actually is.
