The 2010 Dog Day on the Green Festival was a fun-filled event. The perfect weather helped to make the lake-front event perfect for family fun. Okay, it was a bit hot in the sunny clearing, but the MC Steve Dale, of Steve Dales' Pet World on WLS Radio, did a wonderful job of reminding people to keep their dogs hydrated.
Dogs were available for adoption, and in fact some that were adopted at last year's event came to this year's event to be indulged with the many items for sale and to simply have fun. The office of Chcago's Clerk, Miquel del Valle sponsored the event to promote the fact that Chicago is, indeed, a dog-friendly city. The purpose of the event, he said "Is to gain fun and education in promoting responsible dog ownership."
Contests included best costume; pet and owner look-a-like contest; and silly pet tricks. Activities included a children's tent with paw painting; an agility course for all contestants; and doggie yoga. A special guest appearance by Skip Hayes, famous for the Aliotta, Haynes and Jeremiah 70s hit "Lake Shore Drive" included a performance of the event's theme song.
Skip Haynes, a native of Chicago, adapted the lyrics of his hit song to a pet - adoption message for the event. Mr. Haynes is donated $2 from each sale of the song to Safe Humane Chicago to support animal welfare in his hometown. The song can be ordered from Music for Animals by Laurel Canyon Animal Company.
Sponsors of Dog Day on the Green include Bissell, Mitsubishi, Univision Radio, 101.0 The Mix, WLS Radio, Radio Cosmos, and Today's Chicago Woman.
