I really have to say I am pretty down on the direction this team took in the 2010 NFL Draft. I am not a fan of the best player available approach to the draft, especially when a team has obvious needs at specific positions. For the Bills that meant QB and NT, but they used their first round pick on a RB.
It almost makes no sense. Even if Marshawn Lynch’s time in Buffalo is limited, they still had Fred Jackson right? Fred is a more than adequate back, and if this team was not sold on the QB talent in this draft, I would have spent the ninth pick on a NT to solidify the middle of my new 3-4 defense.
I don’t want to take anything away from CJ Spiller, he is probably a great player, but the Bills have issues on the offensive line, and I got to question the decision to draft this guy with this pick. Of course I question most of what this team has done recently.
The problem with using the first round pick on Spiller is it forced the team to reach for DT Torrell Troup with their second round pick 41st overall. Troup was not among the top 25 rated DT’s by the Sporting News, however NFLdraftscout.com has him rated right around were the Bills took him. Only time will tell if this was a big mistake or not.
I really like their third round pick, DE Alex Carrington. He was the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the year with 10.5 sacks. I think he will add a lot to the Bills pass rush.
In the fourth round they took WR Marcus Easley of UConn who made only 10 College Starts, but had a very impressive senior year. Come Round Five they addressed an issue on the O line with Tackle Ed Wang of Virginia Tech. He will join the two young OL prospects drafted by this team in 2009.
In the sixth round they added two pieces that seem like good fits for their 3-4 scheme. Arthur Moats was a DE but might play ILB in the NFL, and LB Danny Batten who has exceptional pass rush skills.
In the seventh round they pick up QB Levi Brown from Troy, and OL Kyle Calloway who should make the roster as a depth player. Brown is a project, and he might work out but the deck is stacked against him
Now a more complete look at the 2010 Buffalo Bills draft class:

Round Two (41): DT Torrell Troup UCF
Round Three (72): DE Alex Carrington Arkansas State
Round Four (107): WR Marcus Easley UConn
Round Five (140): OT Ed Wang Virginia Tech
Round Six (178): LB Arthur Moats James Madison
Round Six (192): LB Danny Batten South Dakota State
Round Seven (209): QB Levi Brown Troy
Round Seven (216): OT Kyle Calloway Iowa
