MTV's 2009 Video Music Awards (VMAs) commercials are not only star studded this year, but also thematic, and very urban. Channeling West Side Story in honor of the show's return to New York, MTV has recruited musicians and actors to shoot a video of the song "Tonight" in the style of the classic movie, but with a modern twist. The collaboration is called VMA Side Story.
That is how Taylor Swift ends up in an old school taxi singing an updated version of the song that sums up every character's expectations of love, life, and that night's scheduled rumble.
The young country superstar spoke to MTV News about the experience, and said, "My version of 'Tonight' was pretty theatrical, because I listened to the song and I heard the song and I'm just like, 'There's no way to do this and not play it up.'" Swift also said, "When we were in the studio recording, it I just kind of went all out — all show tunes. I am obsessed with Broadway," adding, "So I was pretty excited about getting to sing this song."
Taylor Swift is nominated for a VMA in the Best Female Video category for "You Belong With Me."
Another, more surprising, face also makes a brief appearance in the "VMA Side Story" videos: Leighton Meester. She actually sings a bit in another promo, this one with a gang choreography in the subway featuring Cobra Starship (Gabe Saporta, Ryland Blackinton, Alex Suarez, Nate Novarro, and Victoria Asher). The band, and the Gossip Girl actress, are nominated in the Best Pop Video category for "Good Girls Go Bad."
All of them, as well as Katy Perry, Ne-Yo and repeat host Russell Brand, are part of a special version of "Tonight" that will be put together bit by bit before the 2009 Video Music Awards air live on MTV on September 13th at 9pm EST.
