2009 Tennessee Titans draft analysis

Wow, how a couple of months can really change what we think of a team. On draft day this looked like a team that had few holes, coming off 13-3 season where they won their division, the Tennessee Titans currently are 1-6 after Vince Young got his first start of the year.

It is important for the Titans to understand truly what they have in Young; else they will need to draft a QB in the 2010 draft.

Heading into the 2009 draft this team needed a playmaker Wide Receiver, and they had not used a first round draft pick at that position since 1998. While the entire 2008 starting defense returned, there was little depth and this team could have used a LB, and CB. While one of their corner sports is locked up with Cortland Finnegan, Nate Harper is on the other side and he just turned 35.

With the 30th pick in the first round, the Titans went after a playmaker receiver and selected Kenny Britt from Rutgers. Britt was the 8th ranked wide out in this draft and the Titans made him the sixth selected.

Since Britt is only averaging 48 yards per game, and the Titan defense is giving up the most passing yards per game it seems that the Titans may have been better served selecting Alphonso Smith, the corner from Wake Forrest. With that in mind we must give this pick an initial grade of C+.

In the second round with the 62nd pick the Titans began the search for a replacement to Albert Haynesworth by selecting Sen’Derrick Marks the DT from Auburn.

Marks was the 5th rated DT in this draft, and the Titans made him the 6th DT selected. However Marks has failed to crack the staring lineup for the Titans and has just one tackle so far in 2009. Given those facts we have to give this pick an initial grade of a C.

Now let us take a look at the grade for the Titans 2009 draft:

Round One- C+
Round Two- C
Need- B
Talent B+
Average- B-
