As the 40th New York City Marathon approaches on November 1, local runners as well as those arriving to New York City from around the country and globe will be looking to purchase running clothes, bags, and other gear to commemorate this huge achievement that they are undertaking. Here's where to find the best buys in the city, as well as discounts that many retailers are offering.
New York Road Runners headquarters: Located on East 89th Street, between 5th Ave. and Madison Ave., the NYRR office is at the heart of all things running related in New York City, including the New York Marathon. Runners can find official NYM 2009 gear, including t-shirts, shorts, long-sleeved shirts, running jackets, hats, headbands, gloves, gym bags, and more. The day after the race, NYRR will host Marathon Monday Store from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. at Tavern on the Green, which will include a limited-edition marathon results section of the New York Times, finisher medal engraving, and a Marathon Recovery Event presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery. NYM merchandise is also available for purchase online.
Paragon Sports: One of the largest sports stories in Manhattan, Paragon is located on the corner of Broadway and East 18th Street. In addition to their wide array of regular running gear, including shoes, clothes, compression socks, fuel belts, hats, gloves, and more, Paragon currently has in official ING and unofficial New York Marathon 2009 gear. Paragon is also one of the best bets in the city for finding race nutrition, including a variety of gels, bars, shotblocks, and recovery drinks.
