Taylor Swift won the 2009 American Music Awards (AMA) Artist of the Year award! Sunday night, the 37th annual AMAs were held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. The top AMA honor is the Artist of the Year award. Taylor Swift, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Eminem and Kings of Leon were nominated for Artist of the Year. Taylor Swift is on tour and was unable to be at the AMAs, but was able to accept the award live in streaming video.
Taylor Swift was nominated for six AMAs Sunday night, including favorite female artist country and pop rock, favorite album, and adult contemporary artist. Swift also won all of her nominations a few weeks ago at the country music awards (CMAs). It looks like 2009 was the year of Taylor Swift. Michael Jackson passed away in June of this year, and many people expected him to win the AMA Artist of the Year award. This is It, Michael Jackson's movie about his final concert was released in October to sold out crowds around the world.
Michael Jackson was nominated for five awards at the 2009 AMAs, including artist of the year, favorite male artist in Pop/Rock, favorite album for Number Ones, favorite male artist in Soul/R&B, and favorite album Soul/R&B.
Whitney Houston, Adam Lambert, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood, and the Black Eyed Peas performed at the 2009 AMAs. This was Whitney Houston's first live performance in five years.
