2007 Suzuki XL7 SUV being recalled for possible fuel pump leaks (Photos)

American Suzuki Motor Corporation is issuing a recall for 2,830 Suzuki XL7 vehicles according to an announcement by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (Dec. 31).

The vehicles involved are 2007 model year Suzuki XL7 SUV's produced in partnership with General Motors at CAMI Automotive in Ontario, Canada. The Suzuki XL7 shares a platform and many components with the Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac Torrent and Saturn Vue also produced at that assembly plant.

The problem the recall addresses is with the fuel pump modules which have a plastic supply or return port on the pump that may have deteriorated and can crack resulting in a leak that may cause a fire in the vehicle.

Dates for the recall, inspection, repair and/or replacement of the pump modules will be announced later, according to American Suzuki.

The Suzuki recall campaign number is NZ. Owners can call American Suzuki at 1-714-996-7040.

The fuel pump module problem was originally identified as part of a recall action by General Motors in September 2012 involving the Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent, but the fact that there were also American Suzuki XL7 vehicles involved was not made known to American Suzuki or the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration until December 2012.

American Suzuki has, as part of their transition out of the motor vehicle business in North America, made arrangements with their dealer network and suppliers to continue to provide service and warranty work for American Suzuki vehicles. Repairs and replacements of these fuel pump modules will likely be handled by those Suzuki outlets or designated outlets specified by American Suzuki in the recall announcements.

The vehicles in the recall were originally sold or are currently registered in Arizona, California, Nevada and Texas according to the notice. Due to the age of the vehicles, we would urge anyone, in any state, who owns a 2007 Suzuki XL7, to contact Suzuki and confirm their XL7 is or is not part of the recall. Vehicles sold or registered in those states may have been bought and sold several times and are no longer in those original states.

The Suzuki XL7 was produced from 2001 through 2009. The second generation XL7, introduced in 2007, was a crossover entry in the SUV market as was the Suzuki Grand Vitara. This second generation Suzuki XL7 was produced at CAMI in Ontario only until May 2009 when, due to very slow sales, it was discontinued.
