It would seem that despite a strong rookie campaign, in which Johnathan Sullivan recorded 38 tackles, a sack, and started in 13 games his rookie year, and was named to the Pro Football Weekly’s All rookie team that Sullivan is the third bust of the 2003 draft.
The New Orleans Saints picked Sullivan with the 6th overall pick, a selection they traded up for. In exchange for the 6th overall pick, an exchange of second round picks, and a fourth round pick, the Saints sent the 17th and 18th picks in the first round to the Arizona Cardinals.
On the surface this looked to be a huge steal for the Saints. Not only did they get the fifth ranked player in the 2003 draft, Sullivan, but they moved up 17 spots in the second round and added a fourth round pick. The disappointment comes with the fact that the Cardinals used their second round pick from the Saints to draft WR Anquan Boldin.
What makes Sullivan such a draft bust is the fact that six years later he is an unsigned free agent. After spending three seasons with the Saints, where he underperformed recording 78 tackles and just 1.5 sacks in 36 games over three seasons with the Saints.
Heading into 2006 he was traded to the New England Patriots for WR Bethel Johnson. In June of 2006 Sullivan was arrested and charged with multiple counts after being pulled over by police and found to be is possession of marijuana. In October of that year the Patriots released Sullivan and he has not played in the NFL since.
